Khan Murjan – A restaurant in a ‘pyramids’ themed mall?

FNND has discovered a handful of interesting eateries  in Dubai. Some are lovely venues, some serve great food and some are just a bit different from the Dubai ‘norm’ of  gaudy seven star hotels that leave you with a seven star feeling of nausea. But can you take a Riad styled Arabian restaurant set in a fake Egyptian tomb seriously? we headed down to Khan Murjan to find out.   Khan murjan is a beautiful setting of an open air courtyard or Riad – which manages to cover all bases… Excellent live, traditional music that is relaxing and not overbearing. It takes a bit of finding though, located at the bottom of a huge sweeping stone staircase in an old ‘style’ souk…. but it is actually the basement of WAFI mall – a tutankhamun themed mall inside a giant glass topped Pyramid. The friendly and helpful waiters areadorned in fez’s  will regularly top up your Shisha pipe throughout the evening. The authentic food is exceptional – Morrocan, Iranian, Lebonese, Egyptian, Turkish – it’s all here. Super …

A local iftar in Dubai’s Marina

There’s a place across the marina that for the last couple of months Fat Nancy’s been watching from afar, like a scene of Hitchcock’s Rear Window. It’s tucked away from the the marina drag, it’s always packed  so she went to check it out. On arrival, which was early and we were starving, we were shown to one of the corner tables with sofas. Spying big, wooden backgammon boards stacked on the counter and row of shisha … a nod confirmed we would be there for a while. We tried to order food from the waiter, he didn’t speak much English – the split screen TV with six different views of the crowded Tahrir square confirmed this was an authentic Egyptian hang out – he handed us over to the owner with our questions. The owner couldn’t have been more charming and picked out the menu’s best offerings for us: green apple juice, the El Kamar mixed grill cooked to perfection, the fattah moza, the fitir, the lentil soup followed by a medium sweet, Turkish …

Pavilion: Café and Art Centre

Pavilion is a Dubai staple, you can’t live in the city without spending more than a bit of time here.  A café and art space combined with a good menu of light bites, decent work spaces (and internet connection) and shisha for that after dinner relaxation Middle East style if you head here for supper or a private view. The space has regularly changing art exhibitions curated by The Third Line along with screenings of art and cult films. They also run workshops like the interesting idea of Saturday night writing… If you have some writing to do… do it on Saturday night at Pavilion, if you don’t have any writing to do… well head to pavilion anyway and they can set you some writing exercises! The Pavilion is a lovely idea – a non profit art space that furnishes the Emirates with a place to discuss and see artworks by local and international artists, whilst also hosting a diverse range of interesting events, providing a platform for the growing and active arts community. With …
