Shamsuddin – Iranian food in Satwa

Sometimes I read depressing articles and the thought of meat consumption makes me feel sick. Sometimes I eat Iranian food and remember just how beautiful meat really is. How could I ever have thought otherwise?? Those Persians know how to treat meat right. You haven’t experienced tender meat till you’ve had a good Iranian kebab. So I was excited to spot Shamsuddin on Satwa Road recently. It’s pretty bare bones, but that’s just the way I like it. Basic furniture. Tissue boxes. TV on the news channel. Two guys running the whole place. The guy working the grill must have been someone’s son, a baby-faced meat apprentice. Shamsuddin don’t even have a menu. Just decide if you want mutton or chicken, minced or pieces. Simple as that. The rest will come to you. In the face of such choices, we ordered a plate of everything. A great little farmer’s market with a big offering

 Last weekend FNND took a trip down to the farmer’s market on the balcony (next to the car park) of the Emirate’s Towers, she left the house wondering as to the potential of this alternate version set up by Baker and Spice. And what a lovely surprise! There are few things nicer on a weekend that lazily browsing through a market, however small, with an abundance of fresh vegetables, eggs, breads and pastries, delicious coffee straight from Ethiopia’s farms, pure cacao and lucuma (who ever heard of that? it’s a very delicious source of vitamin B) and spiced Yemeni honey. Each vendor had their own story to tell, the founders of the companies were there to tell you about their food, including the owner of Baker and Spice who set up the market. Fat Nancy spent the morning talking food, coffee, herbs and honeys, learning about Ethiopia, farming in the UAE, Yemen and South America. It was great. Dubonnet: A royal cocktail

Dubonnet is a French fortified wine aperitif, enhanced by herbs, spices and a bit of quinine.  It first made its appearance in 1846 in response to a government-sponsored contest to encourage French Foreign Legionnaires to consume bitter-tasting quinine as protection against malaria. Gin and Dubonnet cocktails began to rise in popularity in the 1900s, with Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother having been quite a high-profile fan of the drink.  Her recipe was 30% gin and 70% Dubonnet, with  lemon under an ice cube.  Like mother like daughter, Queen Elizabeth II also reportedly has a gin and Dubonnet each day at lunch.  No need to wait for a malaria outbreak however, or hold out for a royal Jubilee to savor one of these properly pleasant cocktails. Here is FNND’s slightly tastier version… you will need; 1.5 Oz Dubonnet 1 Oz Gin (Hendricks, Monkey or Tanqueray 10 are jolly good) 2 dashes of orange bitters 1 long, thin peice of lemon peel Method; Pour the Dubonnet, Gin and Bitters in an ice filled shaker (lots of ice) …

Fat Nancy’s Summer of Love

Ingredients 8 red grapes (preferably seedless) 50ml Finlandia mango vodka 25ml freshly squeezed lemon juice (about 1/2 a lemon) 50ml freshly pressed (cloudy) apple juice 20ml passion fruit coulee (pass one passion fruit inside through a sieve) Sauvignon Blanc (enough to top) Ice cubes Muddle the grapes in the bottom of a Boston shaker with the mango vodka, add the lemon juice, apple juice and passion fruit coulee. Fill the shaker to the top with ice, shake it like a Polaroid picture and strain over ice into a Singapore sling glass or large wine glass. Top with Sauvignon Blanc.
