Coffee Shops in Amsterdam VII – Cut-Throat Barber & Coffee

Cut Throat Barber and Coffee was started by two New Zealanders inspired to provide a top quality coffee experience.
They source their beans from a local Amsterdam roaster with the intention to offer a simple, solid espresso based menu, drawn from the Australasian coffee culture. It is a straight up New Zealand style of espresso, long black and flat white with no slow brewing or filter style coffees. This approach is old school which harks back to the days of one barista in a behind a small two group La Marzocco espresso machine – cranking out espressos and still managing to clear cups and saucers and chat to customers. It is what has made the New Zealand model of coffee shop such a successful one, so it was refreshing to see it created in Amsterdam which gives the shop honesty and no pretence that we would like to see more of in the modern coffee scene.

We tried the espresso and we found it to be just like a traditional style New Zealand roast profile – I little darker but with good mouthfeel and clearly a blend of maybe south and central American coffees. None-the-less it was a decent shot. The barber shop looked simple and specifically designed for guys grooming so maybe next time I will get a shave with my espresso too.
